TOWN OF WALPOLE HEALTH OFFICER – UPDATE #2 – 23 MARCH 2020

TOWN OF WALPOLE
HEALTH OFFICER
DEALING WITH THE CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) DISEASE FACT SHEET – UPDATE #2

THIS IS A DEADLY CONTAGIOUS DISEASE
BE PART OF THE SOLUTION, NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM

MARCH 23, 2020

THIS IS A NEW (NOVEL) VIRUS. NO HUMAN HAS ANY IMMUNITY TO THE COVID-19 VIRUS. IT INFECTS YOU BY ENTERING THROUGH YOUR MOUTH, YOUR EYES OR YOUR NOSE BY BRINGING IN THE VIRUS PARTICLES SUSPENDED IN EXTREMELY TINY WATER DROPLETS OR BY PHYSICAL CONTACT FROM YOUR HANDS. IT SEEMS LIKE THE AIRBORNE ROUTE IS THE MORE COMMON PATH OF INFECTION. NEW REPORTS SUGGEST THAT A LOSS OF TASTE OR SMELL MAY BE AN EARLY SYMPPTOM THAT YOU HAVE THE COVID-19 VIRUS. STAY HOME AND SELF ISOLATE.

AN INFECTED PERSON CAN APPEAR HEALTHY FOR FIVE TO AS MANY AS TWELVE DAYS BEFORE EXHIBITING THE SYMPTOMS OF FEVER, COUGH AND FATIGUE WHICH MEANS YOU CAN INFECT OTHERS WITHOUT KNOWING IT. IF YOU FEEL LIKE YOU MAY HAVE THE VIRUS STAY HOME. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE TESTED JUST SO YOU KNOW. WE DON’T HAVE ENOUGH TEST KITS. IF YOU HAVE NO MEDICAL PROVIDER IN NEW HAMPSHIRE CALL 603-354-5400 AND IN VERMONT CALL 802-863-7240.

OLDER PEOPLE ARE AT HIGHER RISK AS ARE MEN AND PEOPLE WITH PRE-EXISTING HEALTH CONDITIONS.

THERE IS NO VACCINE OR DRUG SPECIFICALLY FOR COVID-19. THE LONGER YOU ARE WITH AN INFECTED PERSON THE HIGHER THE CHANCE YOU WILL BECOME INFECTED.

OUR MEDICAL COMMUNITY NEEDS YOUR HELP AND COOPERATION. THEY ARE GOING TO BE COMPLETELY OVERWHELMED IF WE DON’T STAY HOME AND TRY TO STAY HEALTHY WHILE DOING OUR SMALL PART FOR THE GREATER GOOD. BE A COMPLIANT CITIZEN NOT A DEFIANT ONE.

HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO

1. KEEP CALM AND STAY HOME. DON’T WEAR A MASK UNLESS YOU CAN’T KEEP YOUR HAND AWAY FROM YOUR FACE.

2. IF YOU ARE SICK, STAY HOME. STAY HYDRATED.

3. MAINTAIN A DISTANCE OF SIX FEET FROM OTHERS.

4. NO HANDSHAKING. WEAR GLOVES.

5. OPEN DOORS WITH YOUR CLOSED FIST, HIP, SLEEVE PULLED OVER YOUR HAND OR GLOVED HAND.

6. USE ONLY YOUR KNUCKLE TO TOUCH LIGHT SWITCHES, KEYPAD BUTTONS ETC.

7. LIFT THE GASOLINE DISPENSER HANDLE WITH A TOWEL OR GLOVE.

8. WASH YOUR HANDS, WASH YOUR HANDS, WASH YOUR HANDS. 20 SECONDS EACH TIME (SING THE HAPPY BIRTHDAY SONG TWICE – THAT TAKES 20 SECONDS).

9. USE DISINFECTANT WIPES (IF AVAILABLE) WHEN OUT IN STORES.

10. HAVE SANITIZER (AT LEAST 60% ALCOHOL) AVAILABLE WITH YOU AND WHEN YOU GET HOME. HERE’S A RECIPE FOR HOMEMADE SANITIZER:

1 Cup (250 ml) isopropyl alcohol (91%)

1 tsp (5 ml) Glycerol OR Aloe Vera Gel OR Honey OR Olive oil

2 Tbsp (33 ml) water

Add the ingredients in the order listed to a clean container, mixing with a spoon until all the ingredients are dissolved.

CAUTION: IT’S FLAMMABLE!

11. COUGH INTO A TISSUE AND DISCARD TISSUE. THEN WASH YOUR HANDS. COUGH INTO YOUR ELBOW SLEEVE IF NO TISSUE IS AVAILABLE. IF YOU’RE COUGHING YOU SHOULD BE HOME.

12. HOPEFULLY YOU’VE STOCKED UP ON SUPPLIES. THEY’RE SCARCE.

13. HERE’S A RECIPE FOR A HOME DISINFECTANT:

4 tsp (20 ml) household liquid bleach

1 quart (960 ml) water

Add the bleach to the water and put the mixture in a spray bottle.

Use this for decontaminating surfaces, door handles, wiping on light switches, steering wheels, touch pads, railings, etc. Let it dry or wait

10 minutes to wipe up.

OLD HOME DAYS 2020 – CANCELLED

OLD HOME DAYS – BACK IN 2022 – Wednesday June 22 through Sunday June 25 – CLICK THIS LINK FOR DETAILS

2021 OLD HOME DAYS – UPDATE
Published in the February 2021 CLARION

OLD HOME DAYS Postponed Again Old Home Days again has sadly been postponed for another year. Originally scheduled for June 2020, the event was rolled to 2021 due to concerns with Covid. But, with safety concerns continuing, and insufficient planning time, the committee recently decided it would again be best to postpone this traditional event. Even trimming it down to a parade and fireworks would group too many people, and proper planning takes the better part of a year. – Ray Boas

———————————————————–

The Walpole Old Home Day Committee has made the difficult but prudent decision to POSTPONE the celebration until next year.   June 24-27 2021 are the tentative new dates.

Use this  additional 12 months to make some Main Street Memories, to plan a reunion, to groom your pet for the show, practice your talent, train for the 5K and think up an award winning parade entry.

Plan to celebrate madly with hand shakes, hugs and social closeness in June 2021.
