BEAR EDUCATION MATERIALS – September 2025

A member of the New Hampshire Department of Wildlife, in reply to a CLARION reader’s query about the recent increase in black bear sightings in Walpole, and if the bears could be re-located, stated there is no bear relocation program once the bear has been around human habitat; but yes, there are ways to retrain the bear and keep it out of harm’s way.

He provided six “bear fact sheets” – linked below, and in summary stated:
— remove bird feeders
— make sure the compost does not have anything sweet or meat based
— secure all trash and put it out only when it is on its way to the dump or being picked up
— be mindful of anything that could attract our bear for a picnic
— wash garbage bins with ammonia as bears cannot stand that smell
— get a boat horn as the loud, abrasive sound will make it unpleasant for the bear to be around
